NETS-T 2: DESIGN AND DEVELOP DIGITAL-AGE LEARNING EXPERIENCES AND ASSESSMENTS

Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETS-S. Teachers:
  • design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity
  • develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress
  • customize and personalize learning activities to address students' diverse learning styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources
  • provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative assessments aligned with content and technology standards and use resulting data to inform learning and teaching.

Reflection: In October of 2009, I was asked to join a team of eight middle schools teachers from various schools in Ohio to create a 6th grade Math curriculum for the Texas Instruments Math Forward series. At the time, there was a 7th and 8th grade curriculum. Our task was to create lesson plans, diagnotics, and Learn Check warm-ups to used in conjunction with the Texas Instruments Navigator system and the TI-73 calculators. The project spanned six months and was completed in March of 2010. I found this project to be both challenging and rewarding. The team was broken into three groups, one for each of the sections of the curriculum. I was in the Learn Check group with two other teachers. We were each given the task of creating approximately 200 questions each. My questions were Algebra and Probability/Data Analysis. The entire group met at the mid-point of our project in January 2010 to view what was completed to this point and to edit each others work. We made suggestions to each other on possible improvements and corrected any mistakes we might have made.

It was a great honor to be asked to participate in this endeavor. I was surrounded by the highest caliber of math teachers. I learned a great deal from them, not only on applications of the Navigator System in my classroom, but instructional ideas as well.
